Priest, Aetas laud KC for various projects

An environmental priest and an Aeta chieftain lauded the Knights of Columbus in the country for their various humanitarian and environmental activities.

Cabanatuan Diocese Director for Ecology, Fr. Jacinto “Chito” Beltran and Aeta Chieftain Carling Baklay praised the contributions of the K of C in various human endeavors, such as promoting and conducting educational, charitable, religious social welfare, war relief and welfare, and public relief work.

Father Beltran said the Central Luzon Conquerors (CLC) of the Knights of Columbus Fraternal Association of the Philippines, Inc. (KCFAPI) and his office are united in conducting or promoting such charitable works for their local communities.

The Aetas were the beneficiaries of the latest activity conducted by the CLC-KCFAPI.

Each KC council that participated in the recently held tree planting project in the diocese provided one sack of rice, one box of sardines, and ten packs of coffee to the local Aeta community.

Baklay said 75% of Aetas are malnourished and they acknowledged the generosity of the K of C for their donations.

The Aeta Chieftain also emphasized the importance of education to the youth, calling on the local government for improvement of education and living of the 85 Aeta families in Doña Josefa, Sitio Bacao, Palayan City, Nueva Ecija.

Meanwhile, the Aeta community showed their traditions, history, and culture through an interpretative dance called as lawin; langaw; tutubi; matapang; unggoy; ligawan; mangangaso; and panggagamot.

The Tree Planting Project of CLC-KCFAPI last September 10 was the biggest group organized so far by Fr. Chito in the Diocese of Cabanatuan.

More than 400 Brother Knights from 32 different councils participated in the event.

The Diocese of Cabanatuan has 28 parishes and 18 Catholic schools. (KCFAPI News)

Knights of Columbus Luzon Deputy Arsenio Isidro Yap urged all District Deputies and Grand Knights to address the needs of their respective communities victimized by Typhoon Pedring.

“May I reiterate my call to all of my brother knights to do everything you possibly can for the victims of Typhoon Pedring. It is in times like this that we can show our volunteerism in action as we affirm that we are indeed our “Brothers’ Keeper,” said Yap.

The Luzon Deputy advised all Brother Knights to visit the evacuation centers in their respective areas and bring some necessary stuff for the evacuees such as food, water, clothing, and blankets.

He also said to possibly organize medical teams to augment the efforts of the government and other Non-Government Organizations.

Yap also requested for those who were not severely affected by Pedring to send relief or medical teams to neighboring communities where their help is badly needed.

“We can also help in the clean-up drive in areas ravaged by flood waters. Others may course their help to our Luzon Office and we’ll send them to the most affected areas,” Yap added. (KC News)

Fr. George J. Willmann Charities scholar ordained priest

Another human instrument of Jesus was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priesthood through the assistance of the Knights of Columbus Fr. George J. Willmann Charities, Inc.

On August 23, 2011, San Carlos Bishop Jose F. Advincula ordained Rev. Fr. Stephen P. Bendanillo to the Sacred Order of Priesthood at the San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral Parish in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

Fr. Bendanillo was a scholar of the Knights of Columbus Fr. George J. Willmann Charities, Inc. during his Theological studies at St. Joseph Regional Seminary in Iloilo City from 2006 to 2011.

On March 28, 2011, only days after he graduated from Theology, Fr. Bendanillo was ordained to the Order of Deacons together with other two seminarians of their Diocese.

The Presbyterial ordination of Fr. Bendanillo was attended by the clergy of the Diocese of San Carlos and St. Joseph Seminary, relatives, friends, benefactors and the faithful of San Carlos, Negros Occidental.

A great deal of the Fr. George J. Willmann Charities programs have been focused on the scholarship of seminarians and priests.

This foundation provides assistance to deserving and qualified students, including but not limited to those in pursuit of religious vocation, formation or development and higher specialized studies. Since beginning of its foundation, the program has already graduated over a hundred priests.

For those who want to avail of the foundation’s scholarship grant, here are the three categories of scholarship: seminarians who are on their last course in theology; priests who wish to earn licentiate or doctorate degrees in ecclesiastical disciplines in local theology schools or seminaries; and priests who wish to earn licentiate or doctorate degrees in ecclesiastical disciplines in Rome.

It may be good to note, that those who have successfully graduated from this scholarship have formed an organization in 1999. They call all themselves, KC-Priests Scholars Association. Yen Ocampo

Phl Knights of Columbus marks Fr. George J. Willmann, SJ 34th death anniv

The Knights of Columbus in the Philippines are commemorating the 34th Death Anniversary of Rev. Fr. George J. Willmann, S.J. on September 14, 2011.

It will be highlighted by a Family TV Mass at the San Agustin Church at 9:00 in the morning with Most Rev. Jesse E. Mercado, D.D., Bishop of Parañaque as Main Celebrant to be assisted by KC Priest-scholars and the Augustinian Priests.

The Mass will be aired on September 25, 2011 at IBC Channel 13 from 9:00 to 10:00AM.
A wreath-laying ceremony will follow at the statue of Fr. Willmann located at the Knights of Columbus Fraternal Association of the Philippines, Inc. (KCFAPI) head office in Intramuros, Manila.

Father Willmann is referred to as the “Fr. McGivney of the Philippines” because, like the venerable founder of the Knights of Columbus, he vigorously pursued the growth of the Order and dynamically worked for the radical transformation of faith into action.

Fr. Willmann spent 44 fruitful and productive years in the Philippines serving young people, the poor, the sick, the orphans, the oppressed, the lonely and the desolate.

Born on June 29, 1897 to very devout Catholic parents in Brooklyn, New York, Fr. Willmann was granted Philippine citizenship by then President Ferdinand Marcos through Presidential Decree No. 740.

Father Willmann established numerous organizations in the country most notable of which is the Knights of Columbus Fraternal Association of the Philippines, Inc. (KCFAPI) which he, together with a number of dedicated KC members, founded in 1958. Denise Solina, KC News

KC continues fight against RH Bill

In reaction to a recent survey that showed respondents favoring the use of artificial birth control methods, a Knight of Columbus official said it remains a big challenge for the Knights of Columbus in the Philippines (K of C) to keep on fighting against the House Bill No. 5043 or popularly known as Reproductive Health Bill.

“As Catholics, we must follow what the Church says ― natural methods such as rhythm method or plain abstinence. I agree it is a personal method. The difference lies in the range of options or alternatives to choose from.”

This was the statement given by Fr. George J. Willmann Charities Executive Director Roberto “Bobby” Cruz, in reaction on the recent SWS survey, which found out that a little over half of adults believed that the use of pills, condoms, and intra-uterine devices (IUD) cannot be considered as abortion.

Cruz stressed those who want information on legal methods need not totally represent those who intend to use artificial methods. And wanting information on government legal methods can be used to know what Filipino should not do and what they are fighting against.

Cruz added this information can be used as a means to convince non-believers to follow the Church's teachings by empowering their campaign on the cause and effect of the RH Bill; to educate the next generations to be socially responsible leaders; and to evangelize fellow Filipinos that the Catholic faith is what they believe in and not what they simply have known.

The Fr. George J. Willmann Charities, Inc., the foundation arm of the Knights of Columbus Fraternal Association of the Philippines (KCFAPI) strongly supports and cooperate all the fraternal, charitable, religious, patriotic and civic enterprises of the organization.

The Knights of Columbus has been at the forefront in the fight against measures that threaten the sanctity of life and family.

The K of C believes that using oral contraceptives (pills) may cause breast cancer. Pills are type 1 carcinogen like arsenic, a chemical element occurs in many minerals, usually in conjunction with sulfur and metals; and asbestos a mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant.
Likewise, the K of C condemns the IUD, a small contraceptive device that is placed in the woman's uterus, which may cause infections and smite.

The organization stands for responsible parenthood, which means Caring, Not Killing. It is the responsibility of the state and of the parents to care for the children… not to eliminate them.

Pro Life Advocacy

The issue on the RH bill has divided the country’s predominantly Catholic population and pitted the Catholic Church against the government that is pushing for its legislation.

Philippines is approximately 85 percent Christian and mostly Roman Catholic, 10 percent Muslim, and 5 percent 'other' religions.

During the 129th Knights of Columbus Convention held recently in Denver, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President and Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar cited the presence of the Knights of Columbus in the country’s dioceses as a big boost in the Catholic Church’s pro-life advocacy.

In the country’s 85 ecclesiastical territories the over 260,000 member knights are active in their pro-life advocacies and promotion of the parish’s pastoral programs.

Luzon State Deputy Arsenio Isidro Yap plans to conduct symposiums, exhibits, and seminars that would enlighten the people on the value of life and the horrors of abortion.
Yap mentioned that each council of the Luzon Jurisdiction will be having its “Monument to the Unborn” to serve as a reminder that abortion is not only “a sin but a crime against life.”

As cited in the Philippine Constitution Article II, Section 12 -the State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception. Yen Ocampo

KC backs Cardinal’s call for prayer and reparation

The Knights of Columbus in the Philippines threw its support on the call of Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales to recite the “prayer of reparation” in all Masses within the archdiocese for the sin of sacrilege and blasphemy committed by the controversial art exhibit in the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

The cardinal has urged all parishes and religious communities to recite the “prayer of reparation” in all masses, from August 21-28.

On August 22, President of the Knights of Columbus Fraternal Association of the Philippines, Inc. (KCFAPI) Guillermo N. Hernandez distributed a copy of the “Prayer of Reparation” to staff members and recited the prayer during the regular Monday Mass held at the KCFAPI chapel in Intramuros.

Likewise, Fr. George J. Willmann Charities Executive Director Roberto “Bobby” Cruz said they also support the prayer of reparation that is to be prayed kneeling during all Masses throughout the week.

“…of course, especially since the Foundation is part of the Knights of Columbus which strongly supports the teachings of the Catholic Church,” said Cruz.

The controversial CCP exhibit, a mixed media installation on contemporary themes, that portrayed religious images accentuated with condom and other prurient objects, has riled the Catholic Church and the Christian faithful.

“Many agree that the work over reached the boundaries of freedom of expression. Most say it is offensive and a great affront to Catholics and Christians, and to all people who value decency. To them the work is a “trash.” And we agree,” Cardinal Rosales said.

The Manila Archbishop emphasized that for Catholics and Christians, the offense goes beyond visual senses. And the public exhibition of the repulsive work is sacrilege and blasphemy.

“It is a sin. It has deeply offended the Father, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and our Church,” Rosales added.

The cardinal has also declared August 26 as a day of penance for the whole archdiocese, enjoining the faithful to do an act of penance or sacrifice in reparation for the sins committed against the majesty of God. Yen Ocampo

International Family of the Year: “Love oftentimes resists order”

“Love oftentimes resists order. Ours was a classic tale of boy meets girl. There seemed to be a magical pull that drew us together. We saw the world through the same eyes and shared the same passion for the arts, music and poetry.”

This was the statement given by a Pinoy couple featured on November 2010 issue of the highly respected Columbia Magazine and the 3rd runner up in the “2010 International Family of the Year” by the Knights in Columbus.

Married for 42 years and have nine children, Isidoro Molina of San Pedro Council 4234 in Manila and her wife, Leah, told their inspiring stories about marriage and family as what the Order’s “2011 International Family of the Year” Awardee inspire about.

Ronald and Elizabeth Simurdiak of Father John Patrick Slowey Council 2963 in Phillips, Wis., and their family were named the Order’s 2011 International Family of the Year.

The couple stressed how the Knights of Columbus helped them in building a successful marriage and how to be a model of charity and Catholic values in their community.

Furthermore, a member of the Order for 32 years, Simurdiak was surprised by the honor because he is more accustomed to giving than receiving.

The couple has three kids, Joseph, 19 and John, 17 – both served as altar boys. And nine-year old adopted daughter named Jenna.

“When you get an award like this it inspires you to live up to what it represents. It is humbling because you know there are so many other people doing more than you who will never get the recognition,” the couple cited.

The entire family is actively participated in the Knights of Columbus activities and to their community as well.

Like what the Molina Family did, Simurdiaks kin hope to bring the message of faith, hope and charity to others -no nationality, no inequity. Yen Ocampo
