Akbayan on GMA's plan to seek treatment abroad

Akbayan Party supports the decision of Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila de Lima to defer the granting of permission to Ms. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo concerning her appeal to travel abroad to seek medical treatment. In light of the impending preliminary investigations against Ms. Arroyo on electoral fraud, we believe that such an important decision should be based on consultations with different sectors while taking into serious consideration the people’s need for justice and accountability.

No less than Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique Ona has said that the bone biopsy operation that Ms. Arroyo is seeking abroad can be done in the Philippines by competent doctors. This only proves that there is no compelling reason for Ms. Arroyo to leave the country.

We also raise serious concern as to the choice of countries that Ms. Arroyo seeks to have medical treatment are not on the list of countries which have an extradition treaty with the Philippines. This raises suspicion that she may indeed seek to evade punishment for her crimes.

We realize that the issue of health should be given paramount attention in any setting and by any person. However, we also stress that such an issue should never be used to evade accountability especially for crimes committed against the Filipino people. As much as we are concerned for the health of Ms. Arroyo, we enjoin the Aquino government and the public to also look after the country’s political health which means ensuring justice and accountability.
