Filipinnovation Moving FOURward

The Filipinnovation Network celebrated its 4th Anniversary on November 25, 2011at the Bayanihan Center, United Laboratories, Inc. (UNILAB), Mandaluyong City. The event highlighted the 2nd Filippinovation Award, which aimed to recognize and promote local innovative technology development by start-up companies involved in biotechnology, information and communications technology, electronics, robotics/mechatronics, material science, nanotechnology or combinations thereof. Cash prizes and gift packs were given to the winners.

The Filipinnovation Award was sponsored by Petron Corporation, DOST and its attached agencies: Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), and DOST Regional Office-NCR, and UNILAB.

The celebration also featured the project, “Towards an Innovation-led Development Path in the Philippines,” implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), with funding support from the International Development Research Center-Canada (IDRC). The project piloted the use of innovation survey in the country to determine the behavioral patterns of selected firms and industries when it comes to innovation.

Moreover, United Laboratories, Inc. (Unilab), the country's leading pharmaceutical and healthcare company, discussed its vision of providing access to affordable and high quality products and services by pursuing community-based programs that respond to the needs of the Filipinos who belong to the Base of the Pyramid. The Filipinnovation Network was formed and launched in November 2007 through private-public partnership with the vision of a competitive and multidisciplinary work force capable of producing value-added knowledge-based products and services of global standards; and, competitive local firms driven by constant innovations brought about by R&D and an enabling public policy environment.

The winners of the 2nd Filipinovation Award are: Ahcil Laboratories, Inc., Barbalite Technologies, Crisologo Concrete Precast Enterprise, Daikkha Dehumidifier Mechanical Dryer, Filimagineers, formerly Mayad-Web 3D. STII-DOST

Nominees for the 2nd Filipinnovation Award

1. Ahcil Laboratories, Inc.
To control the fungus and bacteria in flowers and ornamental plants, Ahcil Laboratories produces natural and non-toxic fungicide and bactericide. The products, proven to be economical and environment –friendly, are applicable for pre-harvest spraying and post-harvest dipping.

2. Barbalite Technologies
It produces a solar-powered road marker that charges during the day and illuminates automatically in the dark. It is visible at a distance even during typhoons and heavy rains. It comes with a 3-5 year rechargeable batteries making it economical for motorists.

3. CL Manufacturing
It manufactures an oil-based formulation from extracts found to have antifungal and antibiotic properties, which eliminate skin allergies caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Candida ablicans, Escherichia coli, Sacharomyces cerevisae, Penillum sp. and Aspergillus sp.

4. Crisologo Concrete Precast Enterprise
It fabricates and produces a precast, which is a viable and durable substitute for wooden door jambs. The product /reinforced concrete door jamb has the following qualities:

• The concrete surface has the same smoothness as wood jambs.
• It is terminate proof.
• It is fire proof.
• It is water proof.
• It can be painted on.
• It has zero deflection in any sudden change of temperature or weather.

5. Daikkha Dehumidifier Mechanical Dryer
A fabrication company that provides an efficient alternative post harvest facilities for farmer groups and/or cooperatives with its Dehumidifier Mechanical Dryer. Its highly conventional facility is equipped with a dehumidifier or heat exchanger that removes the presence of water vapor in hot air produced from the rice hull furnace before the hot air is diverted to the rice/corn bin for subsequent drying process. With its capacity to provide drying activities in any weather condition, it can produce food grade quality products at a low cost operation.

6. Herb Republic Agro Ventures, Inc.
The company is engaged in sustainable integrated farming practices for livestock, crops, horticultural amendments, and coco fiber and peat. It seeks to uphold agricultural practices, which integrate S&T with economic, social, political and cultural systems.

7. Mayad-Web 3D
An ICT-related venture that produces light, photorealistic 3D models that can be accessed through the web. Mayad, with initial targeting of Real-Estate Developers as potential customers, bridges the gap between OFWs and Filipinos abroad and real-estate projects inside the Philippines.

8. Moringa Health Products and Pastries
A biotechnology-based venture that produces Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) leaf powder and by-products like Malunggay delights polvoron, Malunggay-based tea, Moryza coffee and Nutricereal instant meals for babies and oldies and Moringa capsules. The company transforms the physical form of Malunggay leaves from indigestible leaflet to digestible powder so humans and even plants and animals can assimilate the nutrient and be part of the cells raw materials for biosynthesis.

9. SpellDial International, Inc.
The SpellDial App allows people to dial names instead of numbers. It has its own built in phonebook or contacts list that is automatically backed up online. Contact details are always kept up-to-date for as long as the contact also has a Spell Dial account.

The SpellDial App can be downloaded for free and used in internet-enabled phones like iPhones and Android phones. It also offers the SpellDial Name which is a handle or username through which an individual or organization can be contacted.
