The Province of La Union continues to prove itself as a hub of progress and development in the Ilocandia as local leaders and health stakeholders led the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction of the La Union Regional Blood Center (LURBC) on November 2, 2011 at the Bacnotan District Hospital Compound.

“This is another blessing for our province, a lot of lives will be saved,” expressed La Union 1st District Congressman Victor F. Ortega as he proudly shared that in the health program of La Union, every peso allocated for health is properly spent for its intended purpose. He further mentioned that the multi-awarded La Union Medical Center (LUMC), a model for the best provincial hospital in the entire country, has been sharing its best practices with other hospitals in the province and even abroad.

Congressman VFO also announced that he was able to solicit funds from Sen. Gregrio “Gringo” Honasan for the improvement of the Catbangen Elementary School in the City of San Fernando; from Sen. Franklin Drillon for the establishment of a vocational school, also in the City of San Fernando; and from Sen. Vicente Sotto III for the continuation of the Drug Rehabilitation Center located near the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC) Compound.

“Dakkel ti maitulong daytoy a center para kadagiti kaprobinsiyaan tayo” expressed La Union 2nd District Congressman Eufranio C. Ereguel as he exhorted everyone to support the blood center through blood donation while ABONO Partylist Representative Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III expressed his full support for the project to augment readily available blood supply especially from development partners such as the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

In appreciation to the new blessing of the province, Gov. Manuel C. Ortega gave a marching order to all physicians and other medical practitioners to give their best services as their way of helping him take care of the people of La Union.

Speaking in behalf of her husband, Mayor Rufino H. Fontanilla, Vice Mayor Ma. Minda L. Fontanilla expressed her gratitude and appreciation to Governor Ortega and to all the people responsible for selecting the Municipality of Bacnotan as the home of LURBB.

Dr. Valeriano Lopez, Jr., Department of Health Director for the Ilocos Region gave a brief background of LURBB. He explained that it shall be a “well-equiped center” with a Blood Service Facility (BSF) unit, Blood Station Unit (BSU), Blood Collection Unit (BCU) and Hospital Blood Bank. The main purpose of the center is to ensure that there is an adequate supply of safe blood through Voluntary Blood Donation in the entire region.

Governor Ortega later led officials and guests in laying the cornerstone after the site and the time capsule was blessed by Rev. Father Eric Saluta.
